This is a fantastic good read. since first reading it, and although the basics of the plot were familiar, I had no memories of what happened at the end. Which was good. Just brilliant. By the end of Deep Water the pages turn very fast indeed.Very fascinating character study, filled with suspense. This kind of thing is campy fun in tv and movies, but it's nothing but dull in a book.

A bit predictable, but very well written.While this doesn't rank up there with Ripley, The Price of Salt, or Strangers on a Train, it's still Highsmith and that puts it far above most twentieth-century American authors. We are in fact so deep in Vic's head that sometimes when I came back to the book after a break I was surprised that the POV was not in the first person. How dare they accuse you? This is the best book about a fucked-up marriage I've read so far. Adhering to the site’s name, I’ve made a practice of only listing books that I’d rate three stars or more ... that is, Good Reads. I liked how you couldn't help but sympathize with Vic because his wife was a nightmare but at the same time you can see why she is a nightmare if he is able to do the things he does in this book and still be "normal." Deep Water tells the tale of Vic Van Allen and his loose wife Melinda who live in an idyllic suburban town in the Berkshires. To overcome this fear he learned swimming with strong determination and courage. Summer is a great time to lose yourself in a page-turning mystery.

All the characters in this book are irritating and detestable (with the exception of a couple fleeting background characters), have wafer-thin artificial personalities (and every decision they make is inauthentic), and they spend 90% of the book swilling cocktails and exchanging passive aggressive barbs because they all hate each other (but probably slightly less than I, the reader, hated them). This book is not one of the author’s best but still held me in its grip. "Deep Water" is a perfect example of this dichotomy. The plot takes a while to unfold but when it does it takes twists and turns. So, loved it and went to see what else she had written. Good read. Author of the famous Tom Ripley series, beginning with the classic The Talented Mr. Ripley, Highsmith is an expert at crafting psychopaths, sociopaths and on-the-edge characters who often get away with their dastardly deeds. Deep Water was very compelling up until the very end which was pretty abrupt and a bit disappointing (although really, how else could it end?). After an incident during a night stroll, Frank is imprisoned by corrupt police for Sarah's murder. And if someone does start snooping around, well, it's just darn annoying, really. Sarah takes her American boyfriend Frank to her home country in the Arab world.
