The outstanding performances of all the actresses (and not just the delectable Penelope Cruz) are reason enough to delight the viewers, but in addition, despite the seriousness of the issues the film addresses, Almodovar has managed quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour. To top off the family crisis, her mother Irene (Carmen Maura) comes back from the dead to tie up loose ends. If you want to just sit and be mesmerised by a beautifully crafted piece of art then Volver is for you. It’s a wonderful film for which the six main actresses deservedly won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. If you’re usually put off by subtitles, give this film a go, you’ll soon find yourself so absorbed you’ll forget about the subtitles.
Watch all you want. Perhaps, one word in two hundred could I understand but the subtitles are good. I won't spoil it by giving away any details of the plot but it is witty and clever, and Almadovar makes us accept or consider things we would find disturbing or strange in real life.
