Ann — Yes, The Mara is the counter service spot at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. If you dine inside, it's pretty cool because it's as if you are seated under a giant tree. But then I ordered a chicken Caesar salad which was very good, and a BBQ rib entree and that was also delicious. It’s a great place to get away from it all and just take a breather in the middle of one of my favorite Disney resorts.Located at Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House, The Mara counter-service restaurant offers exotic eats inspired by the diverse flavors of the African continent, while also providing more traditional American fare for the less adventurous eaters in your crew.And don’t even get me started on all of the special Disney food cult favorites that we’ll make a trip here just to snag!But I just realized that for all of my visits to Mara, I didn’t actually have my own review of the spot up on the blog!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge serves award-winning, African-inspired specialties and classic American favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner, amid a lush, wildlife preserve. While it will be a little time consuming to travel there via bus for lunch on a park day, AKL is pretty much a destination in itself if you like to check out Disney hotels, and the food at The Mara is always interesting and delicious — no ADRs required. Many of our lunch/quick dinner options this trip will be poolside and we will rely on the Mara quite a bit. You pay for it at the cashier and when the pager goes off, pick up at the food counter. The African stew was absolutely delicious.
We also had a BBQ Pork sandwich that was mediocre at best. We knew that they are served at the Boma, but I was worried about eating at a buffet with my peanut allergy.
