Pure Electric offers the UK's best range of tried and tested e-scooters and accessories. ウサイン・ボルトはBolt Mobilityに、出資者兼創設者として関わる。本格的にビジネスの世界に足を移すつもりのようだ。 Bolt Mobilityが提供するのは黄色いデザインの電動スクーター。デザインは2種類あり、両方が使われる。「女性の靴で 史上最速のスプリンター。あのウサイン・ボルトが、ビジネスの世界に乗り込んできた。会社名は「Bolt Mobility」。手がけるのは、海外で急速に広がっている電動スクーター・シェアの市場である。 5月16日から18日まで、フランス・パリでは、テクノロジー関連イベント「VIVA Technology 2019 Paris」(通称VIVATech)が開催された。 Bolt Mobilityの発表は、開催初日に行なわれた。VIVATechのステージイベントには、ウサイン・ボルト本人と、Bolt Mobilityのサラ・ヘイネスCo-CEOが登場し、サービスをアピールした。 Bolt Mobilityは、同社を「マイクロモビリティの会社」と話す。マイクロモビリティとは、自動車よりもずっと近距離をカバーする、自転車や電動スクーターの市場のことだ。 自転車や電動スクーターをシェアするビジネスは、世界中で拡大している。特に、キックボードにモーターを組み込んだ「電動スクーター」については、手軽であることから、アメリカ・ヨーロッパで急速に普及している。「Bird」「Lime」などのスタートアップ企業が中心だが、そこにBolt Mobilityも参入することになる。 ウサイン・ボルトはBolt Mobilityに、出資者兼創設者として関わる。本格的にビジネスの世界に足を移すつもりのようだ。 Bolt Mobilityが提供するのは黄色いデザインの電動スクーター。デザインは2種類あり、両方が使われる。「女性の靴でも乗りやすいデザインを心がけた」(ボルト)という。 筆者も会場で市場してみた。確かに乗りやすいが、他の電動スクーターに比べ、そこまで変わった乗り心地、というわけでもないように思えた。 電動スクーターは、機材そのものは安価なものだ。街中で乗りたくなったら、スマホのアプリで使えるものを地図の上から探し、電動スクーターにあるQRコードをアプリで読み込む。すると、スマホと電動スクーター内のGPS情報から、アンロックする(乗る)電動スクーターが発見され、使える状態になる。降りる時はアプリから「利用停止」を選ぶと、電動スクーターがロックされる。あとは、そのまま「乗り捨て」だ。料金はだいたい30分で5～600円というところで、国や地域によって少しずつ違う。 パリの街中を歩くと、本当に至るところに電動スクーターがあるのがわかる。筆者はこれまで、サンフランシスコ・サンノゼ・シアトル・ロサンゼルスで電動スクーターを使ってきたが、正直、それらの都市よりも数としては多い、という印象を受けた。ビジネスとして、パリでは電動スクーターが大人気なのだ。 筆者が見たアメリカの都市より、パリは道が渋滞している。そのせいか、伝統的に自転車やバイクを使っている人の姿が多い。道路にも自転車専用レーンの整備が進んでいる(パリに限らず、ヨーロッパの都市に共通の要素だが)。 電動スクーターは自転車専用レーンを通るので、渋滞の影響を受けることもない。自転車レーンのない都市では歩道を走ることになり、かなり危険な印象を持ったのだが、自転車レーンであれば問題は少ない。 というわけで、パリは電動スクーターを受け入れる要素が揃っており、ビジネスパイも大きい。だからこそ、すでに多数の事業者が参入した後でも、Bolt Mobilityはビジネスをスタートすることにしたのだろう。「ウサイン・ボルト」という英雄の名前は、そこでは当然大きな価値を持つ。 一方で、パリにおいて電動スクーターが「問題なく」受け入れられているのか、というとそんなことはない。 自転車専用レーンなら安全なのだが、それでも歩道を走らせる人はいる。そのため、4月3日には、パリ市内の歩道で電動スクーターを走らせることを禁止する条例が制定された。9月には、フランス全土で、歩行での電動スクーター利用が禁止される見通しだ。 市内のあちこちに放置される電動スクーターの姿は、あまり美しいものではない。ちゃんと管理され、並べられている分にはいいのだが、「乗り捨て」だとどうしてもそうはいかない。 個人的な経験としては、意外と故障しているものも多く、「乗ってみたら動かない」というパターンもあった。 安全性には色々疑問はある。それなりの速度が出る上に、構造的に自転車などに比べ安定していないので、転倒事故や衝突事故の可能性もある。「ヘルメットをつけて乗る」ことが、アプリ上でもかなりしつこくアピールされているのだが、実際の街中で守っている人は少ない。 ウサイン・ボルトは、「遅れたのではなく、やるべきことをやっていたのでいままでかかった」と話している。「バランスには非常に気を遣っていて、他より安定して走れるはず。ジオフェンス(GPSによる地域認識)を使い、スピードを落とすべき、混雑している地域では自動的に速度を落とす仕組みも導入している」と工夫について説明する。また、アプリをダウンロードした人には無料でヘルメットを配るキャンペーンも行なうのだという。 アプリのダウンロードや電動スクーターの設置は「数日中に始まる」とのことだったが、帰国までに確認することはできなかった。 Bolt Mobilityでは電動スクーターシェアだけでなく、「EV市場」にも参入する。電池交換可能な小型EVの販売を近日中に開始する予定で、そのお披露目も行われた。 こうしたビジネスが成立する背景には、中国などの生産現場に、EVや電動スクーターを作るノウハウが蓄積され、安価に作る事、改良することも容易になってきたからだろう。 Bolt Mobilityが成功するかどうかは不透明だが、少なくとも彼はある程度本気のようだし、その意気込みこそが、ヨーロッパでの「電動スクーターシェア市場」の勢いの確かさを感じさせるものだった。 パリ エクスポ ポルト ド ヴェルサイユで開催された「VIVA Technology 2019 Paris」。スタートアップ企業を中心としたテクノロジー関連イベントだ。ステージイベントにウサイン・ボルト本人と、Bolt Mobilityのサラ・ヘイネスCo-CEOが登場街中に乗り捨てられた電動スクーター。多いところでは数十メートル単位で電動スクーターが乗り捨てられている状況だ。会場のBolt Mobilityブースには、ボルト本人の写真も。残念ながら、筆者が訪れた時、本人はいなかった
